Achievements

Dental Products division has already developed and transferred technologies of various dental materials such as dental composites, dentine bonding agent and single solution bonding agent, intrauterine drug releasing systems to industry which are marketed under the brand names Restofill, Stedbond Stedbond S and Emily . The other activities include microcomputerised tomograhic analysis (Micro CT) of polymer scaffolds, ceramics, bone implants and dental tissues. The laboratory has been instrumental in developing and commercializing a number of products such as blood bag system dental restoratives such as Restofill Stedbond and Stedbond-S bonding agents, Restofil-N-flo low viscosity nanohybrid dental composite and hormone releasing intra uterine devices (IUD) which are all currently in the market. Moreover, technology transfer of the following products completed.

  1. Respiratory Secretion Solidification System “Chitra AcryloSorb
  2. Glass ionomer cement (GIC)
  3. Radiopaque glass filler
  4. Chemical cure dental composite
  5. Dual cure dental composite
  6. Caries dissolving agents

Currently the laboratory is engaged in the development of nano and organically modified ceramic composites for dental/orthopedic applications, biodegradable micro-needles, cell encapsulated click gels as bioinks for 3D Bioprinting, modified GIC and polymer scaffolds for tissue engineering. In addition to the transferred technologies, many products including bioactive dental composite, antimicrobial composite, organically modified ceramic composite, urethane dimethacrylate and tetramethacrylate resin are at various stages of development and transfer. Activities in Dental Products Lab generally follow a threefold approach a)Product Development and transfer of technologies b) Basic and applied research encompassing areas of tissue engineering, nanotechnology, novel dental materials and drug delivery systems and c) Academic Programs where PhD students and MPhil students work in novel areas of biomedical technology. The division’s focus is on Research and development of Point of care devices for dental and orthopedic applications including preventeve and restorative materials for dental caries, periodontitis, wound healing, osteoporosis and bone defect management.
